Summary of October 2025 GRIT
The October GRIT began as usual with the President’s Message which addressed the concerns of residents about Sept. 4 public hearing on the PNM substation and the proposed routing of high-voltage transmission lines along Tramway. The SHHA President attended that meeting along with many other residents and a continuance was issued until Dec. 3, 2025. The president noted that the SHHA Board of Directors has formed a special committee to work on this issue. He also thanked residents for their attendance of the 22nd Annual Sandia Heights Art tour. He ended with a call for volunteers for the board of directors and committees
The Environment and Safety Committee ( E&S Committee) noted that open burning is generally not permitted in Sandia Heights and cited the Bernco County regulations and website.
The GRIT editor asked for a new editor of the GRIT since the editor’s term on the Board of Directors ends February 2026. Referring to the online GRIT arcives, the article cited the history of the editors of the GRIT from 1979 to the present, and asked for a new editor to join in the history of past editors.
E&S Committee member Dave Jenkins authored an informative article about hardening your home via vent protection from embers. He referred readers to the SHHA website for information.
Claudia Mitchell, VP of the Sandia Heights Artists ( SHA) gave a thanks to folks for the record attendance at the 22nd annual SHA tour, and gave the contact for SHA residents who would like to join.
Reminders that the 2026 Directory and Resource Guide Cover Photo contest deadline is Nov 7, as well as for any updates to addresses were include in this issue.
The GRIT editor wrote up an article about picking up pet waste highlighting the long history of such articles in the GRIT archives.
There was an announcement about Trash pick-up on Tramway Oct 25
Stan Davis, Chair of the Covenant Support Committee (CSC) offered a very informative piece about how to know what county zone your property is in. This is critical in knowing which county ordnances apply to the property. The article offered detailed instructions on how to find zone on the Bernalillo County Website.
Two residents, Elizabeth Edgren and Gerard DelMonte submitted an article that celebrated the beauty of our native chamisa shrubs but warned to keep them trimmed at blind corners and curves especially with the darker mornings, for the safety of our school children.
Claudia Mitchell concluded the issue with an article about the ShMOMA display at Little Cloud Park, explaining that ShMOMA was the Sandia Heights Museum of Mutual Art. It has existed since 2021 like a little library of small art to take and leave art behind. It was founded in 2021 by former resident Erick Guenette and is maintained by the Sandia Heights Artists.
